My Writing Internship

So for a little over a month I have been writing weekly articles for the website Maghanitwork. I think it's a great opportunity to keep up with my writing and to also get exposure for my writing, besides just keeping a blog. In my opinion I think it's more fun than when I wrote for CollegeFashionista because for them I was writing for a specific category and only writing once a week. With this internship I can write about anything related to fashion, whether that mean new collaborations, hot up and coming designers, spring & summer trends, or celebrities. I get to pick what I want to write about and what I think people would be interested in reading more about. I also have to write at least 2 a week, so sometimes when I'm feeling productive I write 3. It's great to see my articles published online and be able to see the ones others write for the website.
So if you like reading about fashion related topics, then go check out the website!

Summer Opportunities

As of now I don't exactly know what I'll be doing or when exactly I'll be working...but I will be working in Illinois for a theater company starting at the beginning of June. I won't know all of the details until I actually move & go in to the office to discuss my timing and work. I will be helping with the costumes for the performance of Guys & Dolls though! So after I meet with the company I'll post more about my work and what I'll get to help with costume wise.

Spring Cleaning

Since I've been home I've been cleaning my rooms- hoping to get rid of all the clutter and unnecessary items I've been hoarding over the years. So far I have two totes full of clothes, a box of books, and two totes of just stuff ranging from desk supplies to water bottles. It's nice to get rid of all of this stuff that's just been taking up space, but it's also really hard. What if I'll want to wear this again? What if I'll need this a week after I donate it? What if...?

All of these thoughts makes it difficult to get rid of everything, but I am making a lot of progress for having just spent a few days cleaning so far. I'm kind of excited about cleaning out my wardrobe (and room) because soon I'll be moving to an apartment for my senior year of college and then after I graduate I'll be moving away from home & I can't take everything, so every little bit helps. Hopefully I'll be able to sell a lot of it at a consignment shop, but whatever I don't sell I will just donate it all so I'm not just throwing stuff away. I'm also giving some of my stuff to friends :) I might even do some little sewing projects and transform some of the clothing into new garments, we'll see!

Back in the States

After wrapping up my time at the London College of Fashion I went on a mini vacation with my father to Scotland. We spent a day in Glasgow and headed off to Edinburgh and then during the week we went to Stirling. It was a great week and I got to see and do a lot more than I had anticipated.

I spent my Friday flying back home and then yesterday I attended Purdue's Fashion Show. The show was great, it was lovely to see everyone's hard work and my model working it on the runway. I can't wait to start working on my senior collection...right after I finalize my ideas. But that's what part of this summer s for: working on my collection.

I'm pretty glad to be home, to be able to unpack my suitcase (yes I did my study abroad semester with 1 suitcase), and to just relax. I have proceeded to do loads of laundry, a little tidying, and of course more applications to summer internships & jobs. As of now I am currently writing for a website called MaghanItWork. I write weekly articles on anything regarding the world of fashion, and it's pretty great. I have applied to a few more writing jobs and design internships as well as working in a theater department with costumes.

I'm going to try & keep my blog updated as much as possible now that I have a little bit more free time.

Bath In Fashion

A couple weeks ago I was in Bath for a weekend trip with a friend. We didn't know about it when we booked our trip but Bath was having their own fashion week events. They called it Bath In Fashion and had talks, designers, and shows going on. We managed to go to a talk on Thea Porter from the curator of the exhibit that is on at the Fashion & Textiles Museum in London, which we had gone to the week before. We bought copies of the book and got them signed! One of the other main things we did was go to the big fashion show on Friday night. It was pretty great. The clothing was from shops in the city & so if you wanted you could purchase them the next day in store.

Here are just some pictures (some of my better ones, we were 2nd row) of the fashion show:

I loved the millinery in the show

A Little Something Extra

After finishing my second hat, I felt that something was missing. While I was in Bath I had tried to find a broach of some sort or just something visually interesting to place on top of the base of my red feathers.

Last week I had gone to the Alexander McQueen exhibit, "Savage Beauty," at the Victoria & Albert museum. It was spectacular and more incredible than I can even fathom writing about, although I will cover the exhibit in another, separate, post. At the end of the exhibit there was the gift shop. They had everything from books and postcards to jewelry and scarves and even sewing equipment! One of the treasures I found was a butterfly clip, meant for hair but I decided it was exactly what my head piece needed. It sits on top of a bed of red ostrich feathers, and the wings are attached by little springs so they move when your head moves. The butterfly is white and black, tying this head piece in with my current ideas for my senior collection which will use white, black, and red as the main colors. I am excited to wear this and/or to see it walk down the runway. Whichever comes first!
